As wedding photographers, our job is to capture not just the big moments but the small, meaningful details that tell the couple’s story. These intricate elements—rings, invitations, shoes, and other personal touches—are thoughtfully chosen by the couple and deserve to shine. Highlighting them adds richness to the gallery and creates a narrative for the day!
With this in mind, and my many years of experience, I thought it would be helpful to share my biggest tips and tricks for navigating the little details of wedding photography. While the couple is often the biggest emphasis, the details can (and should!) have their moment too.
These tips can help you deliver an intricate, stunning gallery, as well as allow you tons of creativity and precision.
Why Wedding Details Matter
But first let’s take a moment to understand the WHY. In short, the details are more than just pretty items; they represent the couple’s style, personality, and the thought they’ve poured into their day. An elegant invitation suite speaks to the couple’s theme, while a grandmother’s bracelet tells a story of love and legacy. When done well, detail shots elevate your portfolio and strengthen your storytelling. So don’t sleep on the details!
Tips for Capturing Wedding Details
- Plan Ahead
Communicate with the couple or planner beforehand to identify what details they want captured. Build a checklist of items and gather them as soon as you arrive to maximize your time. - Bring a Styling Kit (or ask the bride to create one beforehand)
A small kit with items like velvet ring boxes, silk ribbons, fabric swatches, and acrylic blocks can help elevate your compositions. These tools create depth and visual interest in your images. *I have my brides make me a details box containing all the things they want for their detail/ flat lay pictures. This allows them to be involved and part of the creative process if they want to be! - Light it Right
Natural light is your best friend for detail shots, but bring a small LED light or a reflector for poorly lit spaces. Soft, diffused lighting enhances textures and colors. - Choose Thoughtful Backgrounds
Use neutral or complementary surfaces for a cohesive look. Consider using textured tabletops, clean linens, or fabric swatches that align with the wedding colors. - Composition is Key
Pay attention to symmetry, balance, and leading lines. Layer items, vary heights, and leave negative space to make your shots feel polished and intentional. - Work Quickly but Thoroughly
Wedding days are fast-paced. Dedicate time early in the day for details to avoid rushing. A well-executed 15–20 minutes can yield stunning results. - Include Context
Incorporate small props from the venue or the wedding theme. For example, use flowers from the bouquet or elements of the décor to tie the details into the broader story.
