One of the best parts about being a professional wedding photographer is that the job never gets boring, and that’s because each wedding day is so UNIQUE. I love that I get a new experience each time.

But that being said, despite the uniqueness of each wedding event, there are similar shots I try to capture for each wedding. When my clients hear this, it occasionally causes alarm. They want their wedding gallery to be completely unique, to which I completely understand!

Lucky for my clients, I follow up my shared list of “must-capture” shots with the statement that I’m always on the lookout for the details that matter most to THEM, making sure that those detail photos truly tell the story of their special day. From special decor pieces to important guests, perfectly planned outfits to sentimental moments, I’m focused on my client’s uniqueness from start to finish.

Additionally, when I’m shooting at a new venue, this provides such a spark of creativity for me, finding new angles, new corners, and special ways to put the couple and loved ones in front of my lens artistically.

If you’re here learning about me and my photography services for the first time, let me share with you exactly how I create one-of-a-kind magic for each of my clients individually, plus some expert advice to guide you along the way.

How I Make Your Wedding Photos Extra Unique to Your Love

The beautiful, unique details of a couples wedding
Wedding details that are unique to the couple

1. Capture All the Personal Details

Personal touches make all the difference. I love to include your meaningful elements into your wedding photos because I know that they speak to your story as a couple—such as a family heirloom, a nod to your favorite hobby, or decor that reflects your shared interests. These details can become the focal point of beautifully styled shots or meaningful candids.

For example, I have historically captured:

  • Handwritten vows or love letters.
  • Jewelry pieces that were given or lent with love.
  • Initials or special markings on a dress, tie, or cuff.

2. Embrace Authenticity

The best wedding photos are the ones where you’re fully present and unapologetically yourselves. I remind my couples to not feel pressured to pose a certain way or follow trends that don’t resonate with them. If you’re goofy, let that shine! If you’re romantics at heart, lean into the tender moments. I work with you to highlight the essence of who you are as a couple.

Some ways I embrace authenticity:

  • I enjoy providing a “first look” moment where you can react to seeing each other privately.
  • Incorporating candid moments with your family and friends into your timeline, such as walking in the courtyard, clinking glasses as you get ready, etc.
  • My cardinal rule is that my couples should not be afraid to laugh, cry, or show their emotions. These raw moments often become the most beautiful on camera.

3. Plan for Golden Hour Photos

The golden hour—the hour before sunset—is a magical time for wedding photography. The soft, diffused light creates a romantic glow that enhances every shot. I always aim to schedule a brief session during this time for intimate, dreamy portraits that will take your breath away.

Pro Tip: If golden hour happens during dinner or dancing, I ask my couples to slip away for 10 minutes for these shots. Their guests won’t even notice they’re gone, and the results will be stunning.

4. Incorporate Movement

Static poses are beautiful, but movement adds an element of spontaneity and life to your photos. I help provide prompts and poses that show movement so that you look active and alive, such as walking hand-in-hand, twirling on the dance floor, or stealing a playful kiss. These natural motions create dynamic and heartfelt imagery that are unique to each couple.

Some ways that I incorporate movement:

  • Invite the bride to toss her veil into the air for a dramatic effect.
  • Encourage my couple to dance like no one’s watching—even if it’s just the two of them.
  • Ask the couple to take a stroll together while holding hands and chatting.

5. Ask for Your Trust

While a client undoubtedly has ideas for their wedding photos, I always ask for mine to trust me and my expertise to find the perfect angles, lighting, and composition. I communicate openly about any must-have shots, but leave room for creative interpretation. Sometimes, the unplanned moments—like a sudden gust of wind or an unexpected laugh—can lead to the most incredible images, and I’m ready to capture those quickly and artistically!
