This blog post is dedicated to the number one question I get asked as a photographer: “What do I wear?” There’s nothing worse than looking back at a photo and saying “Ugh, why did I ever think that outfit was a good idea.” So, let’s dive in and pick some timeless pieces that will make you love your pictures forever!
Location
Location plays a significant role in what to wear to your couples session. Think of a magazine cover. You don’t normally see models in a flowy, boho outfit while walking through the streets of New York. Nor do you see them walking along the beach in a blazer. They simply don’t coincide with one another. Whatever you wear should pull inspiration from your surroundings. If you are going to be in a city, pick pieces with clean lines, sharp edges, and neutrals like black, white, or gray. If you will be in a nature setting, pick pieces that are full of movement and incorporate earth tones. If you already have your perfect outfit in mind, pick a location that matches your fit and you’re guaranteed to love your photos that much more!
Personality
Of course everyone wants to be one of those “picture perfect” couples you see on pinterest or instagram. But the truth is, we can’t all be them. Forcing that narrative into your session can make your pictures seem unnatural, so think of what makes you and your partner a great fit. Are you more the comfy/casual couple? Do you both love to get fancy and go out? Or do you both nerd-out over the same things? Remember, these photos should tell your love story. So, pick pieces that are authentic to you and you are sure to be happy with the result!
Color
Picture this: you’re getting ready for date night and you pick out this gorgeous, new dress you just bought. You pair it with your favorite heels and earrings. Only to find out your husband has chosen a horrible Hawaiian shirt and paired it with his old flip flops. Not exactly insta-worthy, right? There is one golden rule that can guarantee this will not happen at your couples session: stick to neutrals or muted tones. Neutrals mix beautifully with any color and scenery, ensuring your photos will always look great in your home, no matter how many times you redecorate! If you want to add a bit of color, pick muted tones. This makes matching super easy and avoids any potential clashing. If you’re not sure what colors tones to pick, here’s a color matching guide that makes your job that much easier!
Variety
If you decide to wear multiple outfits during your session, be sure to mix it up! Remember, we are trying to tell your story. Maybe that means showing off the school where you met by wearing matching jerseys, or something you’d wear while you’re doing your favorite activity together. For the next location, wear something that offsets the latter, like getting dressed up. Whatever the case may be, make sure your outfits tell your entire story as a couple. Overall, go with your gut and have fun with your choices!
