Styling your senior session

Senior

As a senior, you want the trendiest pieces for every occasion, especially your senior pictures. Unfortunately that’s difficult for two reasons: It gets expensive real fast (just ask my credit card company) and you can lose a piece of your true self when following all trends. So, today’s post is all about finding your perfect style for your senior photos.

My number one tip: Don’t just follow the trends! Pick pieces that make you feel like your most confident self.

While it’s easy to just buy the first thing you see the “it girls” wearing on tiktok, that doesn’t always represent your personality! Think about what you want to remember about yourself and your life in school. What do you normally wear on girls night or dinner with your family? What is your favorite color? What is your favorite go-to pair of jeans? What makes you feel the most confident? Wearing your “go-to’s” for your session will ensure that you feel comfortable in front of the camera and look beautifully confident in all your photos!

Now that we’ve covered the basics of styling your senior session, let’s dive deeper into the specifics of finding your perfect style!

Location

Location plays a significant role in what to wear to your senior session. Think of a magazine cover. You don’t normally see models in a flowy, boho outfit while walking through the streets of New York. Nor do you see them walking along the beach in a blazer. They simply don’t coincide with one another. Whatever you wear should pull inspiration from your surroundings. If you are going to be in a city, pick pieces with clean lines, sharp edges, and neutrals like black, white, or gray. If you will be in a nature setting, pick pieces that are full of movement and incorporate earth tones. If you already have your perfect outfit in mind, pick a location that matches your fit and you’re guaranteed to love your photos that much more!

Color

Let’s circle back to your favorite color. Is it pink? Black? White? Do you have a color that compliments your skin tone or eye color? Whatever it is, wear it! Complementary colors will give you an effortless glow in your pictures, and make sure you stand out in any background!

If you’re not sure where to start, there is one golden rule that can guarantee you will look amazing: stick to neutrals or muted tones. Neutrals mix beautifully with any color and scenery, and add a timelessness to your photos, meaning you’ll love them no matter how much the trends change!

If you want to add a bit of color, pick muted tones. This makes matching super easy and avoids any potential clashing with colorful or busy backgrounds. I always recommend staying away from wearing very bright neon colors, as these tend to wash you out!

Variety

If you decide to wear multiple outfits during your session, be sure to mix it up! Remember, we are trying to tell your story. Maybe that means showing off all your high school achievements with a letterman or uniform, or something you’d wear while doing your favorite activity. For the next location, wear something that offsets the latter, like getting dressed up. I always tell my clients to start with 3 base outfits; one dressy, one casual, and one in between. From there its super easy to switch heels for cowboy boots, or switch out tops to get the most out of your outfits. Whatever the case may be, make sure your outfits tell your entire story and personality. Overall, go with your gut and have fun with your choices!

The “don’t”s of styling your senior session

While your senior session is all about you and what you want, there are a few things to stay away from when picking out your outfits to make sure you look and feel your best…

  1. Bright, neon colors (they tend to wash you out)
  2. Short-shorts (I don’t care who you ask, these are NOT comfortable)
  3. Tight form fitting clothes (I love showing movement in my photos. Also these are not always comfortable)
  4. Anything that doesn’t make you feel your best!
